Angelica Lim is an Associate Professor Practitioner in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, where she directs the ROSIE Lab. Angelica is a Canada CIFAR AI Chair, focusing on robots and AI systems that read and respond to human social behaviour, an initiative she led with the emotion and expressivity teams behind the Pepper humanoid robot in France. Lim took her bachelor’s degree in computer science with an artificial intelligence specialization at Simon Fraser University, then a master’s and a doctorate in informatics at Kyoto University, where her thesis built a robot emotion system modelled on infant development. That work described emotion in four shared dimensions of speed, intensity, irregularity, and extent, so that the same underlying representation could drive a robot’s voice, its gestures, and the way it moved.
She spent the following years in industry in France, leading the teams responsible for emotion and expressivity on the Pepper humanoid at SoftBank Robotics, before returning to SFU. She now directs the ROSIE Lab, short for Robots with Social Intelligence and Empathy and named for the Jetsons robot, where her students work on nonverbal communication, gaze, gesture, and, in one recent project, salsa dancing as a testbed for real-time nonverbal coordination. She was appointed a Canada CIFAR AI Chair in December 2025, hosted at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, where she is also a Fellow.
She is very direct about the limits of what her own field claims. Her position on emotion recognition is that no system can tell you how a person feels, because only that person can, and that framing the technology as though it can is what makes it dangerous.

She covers why the physical world is harder than simulation, what is wrong with the framing of emotion recognition, the psychology behind why an unresponsive system feels bad to use, why AI should adapt to human conversation rather than the reverse, and what she thinks productivity gains from AI ought to be.
“First of all, because it’s kind of impossible to say that an AI can recognize how you feel. Right. I can’t say, only you can say how you feel. There’s no way that anything else can say how you feel.”
“I have always been concerned ever since, you know, we had these smart home devices that people would kind of adapt themselves to the technology just because that was their limitation. So, for instance, the fact that you would have to speak all in one breath to be able to have a response from your AI product. That’s not a human way to speak.”
“But in real life, there’s, you know, friction, there’s slippage on the floor that makes it so as much as you would try to go there, it doesn’t always work out the way you planned. And in real life, there’s all sorts of uncertainties, like people might just, you know, randomly try to wave in front of the camera because people tend to do that with robots.”

Keenan Beavis is the founder of Longhouse Branding & Marketing, a Langley, British Columbia firm he started in 2017 and has since grown into a nationally recognized agency. Kat Callaghan is a Canadian broadcaster and voice artist who has worked in radio since 2006, and she is the Digital Media Host of the Canadian AI Advancement Institute, where she conducts our Season 1 expert insight interviews. He previously served as a senior policy advisor to Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. Dr. Greg Lee is Lead Data Scientist at Fundmetric in Halifax, where he builds the machine learning systems behind the company’s charitable giving predictions, and an Associate Professor, currently on leave, in the Jodrey School of Computer Science at Acadia University. Frincy Clement is an award-winning AI leader and an advocate for women in technology. Derek Froese is the founder and President of Koala Technology Ltd., an IT consulting firm in Abbotsford, British Columbia, that has grown from IT support into digital adoption consulting, business automation, and AI. He helped take an enterprise software company to a NASDAQ listing in 1999, rebuilt it after the dot-com crash, and sold it in 2008, the same year he founded FundRazr. Timothy King works with CyberSci, Canada’s national cyber security challenge, which runs regional and national competitions for college and university students across the country.
