Generative AI tools can be incredibly helpful when used properly; alternatively, they can be detrimental to a task or workflow if misused. This course teaches techniques to ensure your work alongside a generative model is effective, repeatable, consistent, and produces quality outputs.
Effective Prompting for Generative AI Models is a short online course from the Canadian AI Advancement Institute. It is a prompt engineering course for learners who want to implement generative tools in their daily workflows and are seeking strategies and tools to do so effectively.
In approximately five hours, you will have a basic understanding of the main AI models, a working knowledge of the available generative tools, and a set of prompting methods you can apply in your generative AI sessions.
The course starts with a shortlist of available consumer-facing AI models, what separates them, along with their distinct features. This is a helpful, ever-changing foundation, since using the right, most advanced tool for your specific task is an important part of your ongoing success.
Building on this is the core of the course: effective prompting. It covers zero-shot, one-shot and few-shot prompting, and the CIC prompting method, which gives you a structure for aligning generative AI use with a specific task or workflow. It also covers what to do when an answer comes back wrong: how to assess whether the prompt is the problem, and how to refine it through continuous feedback.
The gap this course fills shows up clearly in the national numbers. Statistics Canada found that 93.4% of Canadian workers were aware of generative AI tools by March 2026, but only 51.5% felt familiar with applying them to their own work. Awareness is close to universal. Capability is not, and the distance between those two figures is almost entirely a question of technique.
Use is high regardless. The same survey reports that 35.9% of workers used generative AI at work in the preceding year, with 31.4% of those users reaching for it daily. Most of that is happening unsupported: the Future Skills Centre found that nearly half of employees using AI receive no training at all, and over a third receive only minimal guidance.
That is how bad output gets shipped, and how the tools end up written off as unhelpful by people who were never shown how to ask. A few hours of structured practice is the difference between an assistant you second-guess and one you can hand real work to.
