Revan MacQueen - Machine Learning Expert

Revan MacQueen is a machine learning engineer at RL Core Technologies in Edmonton, where he builds reinforcement learning agents that control industrial processes. He holds a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Alberta, where he studied under James R. Wright; his research on self-play in multiplayer games was published at NeurIPS, and he has taught machine learning foundations at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. Revan shared written expert insights with the Canadian AI Advancement Institute in September 2025, and returned to record a Season 1 expert insight interview.

  • AI expert in reinforcement learning, game theory, industrial process control, and machine learning fundamentals.
  • Supporting CAIAI in advancing AI literacy and practical machine learning understanding.
  • Academic and professional achievements include, but are not limited to, a Master of Science in Computing Science from the University of Alberta, a first-author paper at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems in 2023, and publication in Transactions on Machine Learning Research.
  • Currently serving as a machine learning engineer at RL Core Technologies, and previously served as a machine learning facilitator at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute and as a teaching assistant at the University of Alberta.

About Revan MacQueen

Revan MacQueen, machine learning expert at RL Core Technologies

Revan MacQueen is a talented data scientist and machine learning engineer specializing in reinforcement learning. At RL Core Technologies, he applies this to industrial control, focusing on water treatment; one deployment with EPCOR in Edmonton put an agent in charge of a hydrogen sulphide scrubber and sharply cut its output.

His academic work is in game theory. His master’s thesis at the University of Alberta, supervised by James R. Wright, asked when an agent trained only against copies of itself can be trusted against opponents it has never met. The answer, published as Guarantees for Self-Play in Multiplayer Games via Polymatrix Decomposability at NeurIPS in 2023, identifies a class of games where that guarantee holds. He has also co-authored work on softmax alternatives in reinforcement learning and on using game theory to select static analyzers for finding software vulnerabilities.

Revan's Expert Insights

MacQueen has contributed to CAIAI twice. He wrote expert insights for our course material in September 2025, and he appears in Season 1 of our recorded expert insight interviews. He is among our most widely cited contributors and appears in the Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course.

  • Pre-digital text insights, 2025: Written contributions dated 12 September 2025, cited in the Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course.
  • Digital insights, Season 1: A recorded interview on reinforcement learning, reward hacking, the history of AI hype cycles, and the social responsibility of practitioners.

Excerpts from a Reinforcement Learning AI Expert

“Machine learning models take in a bunch of training data, and they learn some statistical patterns within that data. Afterwards, you may ask it to do some task for you. It’s going to take those patterns and extrapolate them. Sometimes it extrapolates in ways that make sense to us – and sometimes it extrapolates in ways that don’t match reality or our own intuitions.”

“If you want your AI to understand some sort of topic very well and not hallucinate or be inaccurate, you have to provide that in the training data. However, it might not always be in the training data. You may not have the ability to retrain your model, in which case you should try and give the model more information in the context.”

“When working with AI models, you can reinforce responses that are more factually accurate. This can reduce the amount of hallucinations. Additionally, chain of thought prompting is another potential solution. If you ask your models to give you their reasoning steps, it’s been shown that this leads to better and more accurate responses.”

CAIAI Courses That Revan MacQueen Has Contributed To

Introduction to Artificial Intelligence is the Canadian AI Advancement Institute’s full course and the foundation behind our beginner course offerings. This course spans five modules and is supported by the 16-chapter Introduction to Artificial Intelligence textbook, which guides you through the basics of AI ethics, AI security, machine learning, model training, prompt engineering, the practical applications of generative AI, and the customization of no-code AI tools.

This text is supported by educational experts from across Canada, the United States, and Europe, who share their AI insights to bring you relevant, valuable knowledge. This course was developed with their guidance and in consultation with public- and private-sector stakeholders.

Introduction to AI Ethics and Security is a short online course from the Canadian AI Advancement Institute for learners who may already be using AI tools or are AI-curious. It is especially helpful for those looking to implement AI without creating problems for their employer, clients, or themselves, and it takes under five hours on average.

Introduction to Machine Learning is a short online course from the Canadian AI Advancement Institute that introduces machine learning for AI-curious learners who want to learn the basics. Ideal learners also include managers, analysts, educators and business owners who keep encountering machine learning in decisions and want to stop nodding along.

Effective Prompting for Generative AI Models is a short online course from the Canadian AI Advancement Institute. It is a prompt engineering course for learners who want to implement generative tools in their daily workflows and are seeking strategies and tools to do so effectively.

In approximately five hours, you will have a basic understanding of the main AI models, a working knowledge of the available generative tools, and a set of prompting methods you can apply in your generative AI sessions.

Practical Applications and Customization Features of Generative AI Tools is an online generative AI course for beginners. It is a launchpad for learners putting generative tools into their daily workflows, in the workplace or in everyday life, and it is one of the most hands-on and practical courses in our beginner catalogue.
