About Derek Froese

Derek Froese, IT and AI automation expert and founder of Koala Technology

Derek Froese has been the computer person in the room since grade five, when a teacher told him that learning HTML would let him build the school website. He spent a summer teaching himself the language, never got to build the site, but kept the skill. He started Koala Technology in 2015, incorporated it, and went full time in 2019.

The firm began with IT support and now covers cloud and datacentre work, cybersecurity, websites, business systems, and a growing automation and AI practice. He also works on advancing digitization efforts at small businesses, assessing an organization to find where technology would actually change its costs, revenue, or decision-making.

Derek's Expert Insights

Froese has contributed to CAIAI twice. He shared expert insights for our course material in January 2025, and he appears in Season 1 of our recorded expert insight interviews. The written insights are more governance-minded and sit in the security and ethics material; the interview is where he works through what to automate, what to leave alone, and what a business owes the people on the other end of the process.

  • Pre-digital text insights, 2025: Written contributions dated 14 January 2025, cited in our Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course, our course on AI ethics and security, and our machine learning course.
  • Digital insights, Season 1: A recorded interview covering data capture by AI tools, human accountability for AI output, and how to choose automation candidates.

Excerpts from a Business Automation AI Expert

“The most sure-fire way to ensure confidentiality and integrity is to train your own open-source AI models on internal hardware and networks. However, this is cost- and expertise-prohibitive. When using cloud AI models, it is critical to understand whether your data will be sandboxed from other tenants, if it will be used to train and correct the AI model and where your data will be stored and exposed.”

“Right now, a typical business has staff that are working on mundane and repetitive tasks – answering the same questions repeatedly, processing the same forms or data repeatedly, doing the same tasks repeatedly. AI can take-over the mundane from your staff to let them focus on creative and innovative pursuits that drive the business forward rather than just keep it afloat. A lot of jobs are going to get more purposeful and meaningful because of AI.”

“As you begin using AI tools, you want to ensure you are not uploading or connecting them to your corporate data without oversight from your data governance team. You will want to ensure you clear it with the team first, as “Shadow IT” is much more dangerous with the prevalence of AI tools.”
