Many professionals have received a memo, a boardroom lecture, or a pep talk from a manager telling them their future is AI-enabled and it’s time to implement generative AI. Most simply open a generative AI tool, type something in, and quietly decide it was not built for their job. This course closes that gap, teaching you to apply generative AI to your work and to shape the tools around your workflows in a way that benefits you.
Practical Applications and Customization Features of Generative AI Tools is an online generative AI course for beginners. It is a launchpad for learners putting generative tools into their daily workflows, in the workplace or in everyday life, and it is one of the most hands-on and practical courses in our beginner catalogue.
The course runs in two halves. The first half, practical applications of consumer-facing generative AI models, covers text, image, and video generation; research and summarization; and structured and unstructured content writing.
The second half, customization, covers the tools and platforms that make customization possible, including the GPT Editor, APIs, and consumer-friendly interfaces, and walks you through building, testing, and refining a custom model. This part requires your own paid ChatGPT or Gemini subscription.
The materials consist of a mix of chapter readings from the course manual, course videos, a quiz requiring 70% or higher, and online discussions. Nothing is delivered live, so you won’t miss any sessions.
AI has moved from experiment to operations in Canadian workplaces faster than training has kept up. Statistics Canada found that 19.2% of businesses used AI to produce goods or deliver services in the second quarter of 2026, triple the 6.1% recorded two years earlier, and that among those businesses only 32.0% provided AI-related training for existing employees. The tools are already in the building. The instruction is not.
Depth of use is where that shows. Among Canadian workers using generative AI at work, Statistics Canada reports that 63.5% apply it to some but not most tasks, while only 11.6% use it across most or nearly all of their work. Most people have found one or two things it does for them and stopped there, which is what happens when nobody shows you the rest.
It is worth closing that gap. The Future Skills Centre reports that demand for core AI skills rose 37% between 2018 and 2023, and workers with AI competencies command up to a 56% wage premium. The skills in this course are the applied end of that, and you can learn them without a technical background.
CAIAI has delivered AI education across a wide span of Canadian organizations: a chamber of commerce introducing AI to its member businesses, a national association training delegates at its conference, a zoo bringing its management team up to speed, a nonprofit integrating AI without compromising how it serves its community, and land management and maintenance firms working AI into daily operations. Below are just a few of the AI learning engagements we have facilitated:
These articles cover the same ground the course does, and give a fair preview of how it is taught.
Learners or employers are usually unaware of opportunities to pay for their learning. We have shared resources to help you identify available funding opportunities, including scholarships for individuals and grant programs for individuals and employers.
Apply for a scholarship through our Canadian AI scholarships page. In addition, visit our Canadian AI grant funding page to see what individuals or employers can apply for.

Our mission is to help Canadians learn, adapt and succeed with AI. That is exactly what a course like this is for. The tools are already in Canadian workplaces, and what decides whether they help is whether the people using them were ever taught how. We build our courses with industry experts and institutions so that what you learn holds up at work.
