About Adina Gray

Adina Gray, AI in education expert and founder of PurpleOwl AI

At PurpleOwl AI, Adina runs keynotes, workshops, and executive sessions, which she says help leaders, teams, and organizations prepare for a future in which artificial intelligence is reshaping work and opportunity.

She came into the AI literacy space from an education background of roughly fifteen years at Thompson Rivers University; she taught finance and business ethics, coordinated open learning for the business school.

She signed up for ChatGPT within weeks of its release in November 2022, began using it to build course materials, and went on to help organize the school’s AI summits, which brought students, instructors, and business leaders into the same room. She founded the AI in Education Network of British Columbia, connecting educators across K-12 and post-secondary education, and has been a visiting lecturer at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Tianjin University of Technology in China.

Her public argument is that institutions have spent too long trying to detect and punish AI use and not long enough teaching people to use it well, and she advocates AI literacy for students and educators alike.

Adina's Expert Insights

Gray appears in Season 1 of our recorded expert insight interviews. She covers how universities moved from policing AI use to teaching it, why assessment rather than the student is what needs rethinking, and what the evidence says about AI and the future of work.

  • Digital Insights, Season 1: A recorded interview on 29 July 2026, covering AI in higher education, AI literacy, assessment design, and AI adoption in Canada.

Excerpts from an AI in Education Expert

“So the focus should shift away from catching, punishing, and detecting toward rethinking assessment and education. And I think we’ll see both in the workplace and within educational institutions where AI will be just common use.”

“So we are world leaders, we have world-renowned AI research centers, thousands of companies that are developing AI products, but in terms of adoption, we are very low. We are very good in AI research and development, and very cautious when it comes to adoption compared to much of the world.”

“It’s not that we don’t have enough; it’s that we have too many, and people don’t know where to start. There are thousands of tools out there. If I want to start, like, what tools should I start with? Well, start with one, start with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, and focus on it and learn it well.”
