The gap between using a standard AI chatbot and building one that already knows your needs is much smaller than it looks, and it doesn’t require code. This customization can make a big impact on your AI efforts and be far more effective and enjoyable than using a standard chatbot. This module will help you close the gap by showing you how to configure, test, and share a custom, consumer-facing AI model of your own.
This is Module 5 of CAIAI’s Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course, available as an individual module, and offers a hands-on approach to customizing generative AI models for specific tasks, industries, and individual use cases. It also introduces the no-code platforms that make this possible, such as OpenAI’s GPTs and Gemini’s Gems, covering customizing, testing, and deploying these models ethically, safely, and effectively.
The module runs across four chapters:
The materials consist of chapter readings from the Introduction to Artificial Intelligence textbook, course videos, and online discussions where you post at least one comment addressing each chapter’s prompt. Discussions are central in this module, as building things and sharing your strategies is where you will learn fastest. You’ll also benefit from seeing someone else’s approach. Assessment is through the module assignment rather than chapter quizzes.
Off-the-shelf assistants are general by design, which is why so much output needs rewriting. Model customization as a skill is also scarce, which is important to note, as The Future Skills Centre reports that demand for core AI skills rose 37% between 2018 and 2023 and workers with AI competencies command a 56% wage premium, while only 32.0% of AI-using Canadian businesses trained their existing employees. Being the person who can build the team a working tool is a distinct position to hold.
