Excerpts from a Policy AI Expert

“Part of the problem [with gaps in an AI’s knowledge base] is that a lot of the customer-facing models [are] not going to ever tell you ‘I don’t know’. So they generate an answer even if there is no answer to be had or even if the full information is not there.”

“I would say one of the biggest causes of hallucinations is just bad prompting. So make sure that you prompt properly and try to anticipate what kind of incorrect information you don’t want [in your outputs]. Also, be sure that you search and connect a citation to everything that you do.”

“AI models can be very useful for research tasks. Being able to cut through what would take an hour into a five-minute task [is the] kind of adoption within research, [that] I think, is extremely useful. However, when complex understanding or deep analysis of something new is needed, you really should not be using LLMs [as your source of truth]. It can erode your understanding of the topic and undermine [the] legitimacy [of your] decision-making.”
