About Diane Gutiw

Diane Gutiw, AI research lead at CGI and CAIAI responsible AI in healthcare expert

Gutiw has spent more than three decades at the intersection of healthcare data, standards, and emerging technology. She worked on HL7 in the late 1990s to make health systems interoperable, and was at SAIC while colleagues built BioSense to track hospital-acquired infections across institutions. Her doctoral research modelled clinical decision support and expert systems for medicine, including pre-hospital triage, before generative AI arrived. That history shapes how she talks about the present: clinical decision support has been in electronic medical records since the 1980s, so the question is not whether to use AI in medicine but how far the support can now extend.

She was one of 26 experts appointed to the Government of Canada’s AI Strategy Task Force in September 2025, a thirty-day sprint that fed the AI for All strategy, and her assigned stream was research and talent. Her concern is downstream benefit: Canada produces world-leading AI research and then loses its commercialization, and her recommendations focus on bridging that gap.

Excerpts from a Responsible AI in Healthcare Expert

“The biggest risk to me is the risk of missed opportunity. Because if we’re so afraid of these technologies and what they can do, we’re going to miss the opportunity for the early brain bleeds, for the reducing the time to detecting cancers, to the increasing our knowledge.”

“It doesn’t replace the healthcare provider. It doesn’t replace the access to care. It channels people to the right access of care in an order that’s going to allow more people to get services with less.”

“A lot of people are waiting for permission to be efficient. You know, these tools make you efficient. We need to give people the permission to be efficient, but still use critical thinking.”
